Ocean View Host offers
affordable and easy-to-use choices
for domain name transfer services!
To help you better
understand the process of using a domain name we provide you with
the following information:
-
Registering a new
domain name - If you do not currently have a domain name
and are obtaining one for the first time now then you are registering
(buying) a new domain name. The name you choose can not already be in
use by someone else. Please use our Domain
Name Lookup to check the availability of the name you want to
register.
-
Transferring a domain
name - If you already own a domain name that you have previously
registered with another web host or domain name registrar service (registrar
service companies keep the records of who owns what domain names) then
you need to transfer the name to our services in order to use it with
your new web hosting package. Transferring a domain name means changing the
information on the domain name record (the DNS information) so the
name now points to your new hosting package at our services. Your domain name
record itself stays with the registrar service you
currently have it with and you will continue to be billed for domain name
registration from that company.
-
Moving a domain name
- If you wish, in addition to transferring your domain name (changing
the DNS) we can
also move it from your current registrar to our domain name
registration services. Your domain name record will now be held with
our registrar service company and they will bill you for domain name
registration. Additionally, when we move your domain name we will also
extend for free the registration for 1 full year (i.e.
add 1 year to the expiration date for free!)
-
Renewal of domain
name - Periodically your domain name registration has to be
renewed with the registrar service you are using (either our service
or your own). The length of the renewal period will depend on the
policies of the specific domain name registrar. Typically domain names
can be renewed for 1 to 5 years. In most cases the domain name
registrar will contact you via email to notify you that it is time to
renew your domain name. You have to follow the registrar's
instructions exactly and completely for renewing your domain name. If
you do not renew your domain name it will expire and someone else can
take it for themselves! So be sure to keep careful records of when
your domain name expires and watch for the renewal notice (if you
haven't received a renewal notice and the expiration time is near
contact the registrar immediately!)
Please Note:
With all our domain name registration service YOU are always the
owner of your own domain name! Some web hosting companies put themselves
as the owner of the name - we do not! All domain names
you register through us or transfer/move to us remain your own to
do with as you please.

- Step 1
– Make a full copy of your current web site.
You need to make sure you have a
complete and up-to-date copy of your entire web site on your home
or business computer. If you have not already done this, you need to
connect to your current web hosting provider and download or transfer
all of your files to your own computer. This may require using an FTP
program, depending if you use an html site builder like Microsoft
FrontPage. If you have already canceled your service with your previous
host provider and you do not have a copy of your files, then the only
thing you can do is to request a copy of them from your old provider and
hope they still have it on their servers. If not, then unfortunately you
are going to have to start over from scratch.
By "full copy of your current
web site" we are referring to your html documents, images,
scripts, order forms, databases, data files etc.
Once you have your entire web site and
everything you need to properly move your site to another server, then
please go to step two of our transferring program.
- Step 2
– Purchase one of our web hosting packages.
The next step in the transferring
process is to select one of our hosting plans that is right for your
business and sign up via our secure online order form! Click
Here to place your order now via our secure order
form. Once you have completed this task, then continue on to step three.
Note: Your current domain
registrar may contact you to confirm the transfer. This is done for your
protection. If they do contact you, please be sure to follow their
directions accurately and completely to confirm the
transfer and avoid delays.
- Step 3
– Upload all your web site files to our server.
Once you have signed up for our quality
service your account will be setup within a few hours from the time we
receive your order if paying by credit card and no problems arise. The
time frame varies depending on factors such as if you had completely
filled out the order form correctly. When your account is activated, you
can upload your web site files to our servers via an FTP program or
FrontPage using the temporarily IP address that we give you. You may use
this address immediately. Use it until the transferring process is
completed. At that time you may use your domain name instead of your IP
address.
When your account is activated and goes
live, we will send a request to the registrar you originally used to
register your domain name for it to be transferred to our servers. This
process may take a few days. We highly recommend that you upload your
entire web site using your temporarily IP address as soon as possible
(before the domain transfer is completed). This way, you will have a
risk free environment of experiencing any downtime. Also, if you have
all of your web site files upload to our servers before your domain name
transfers then your site will show up when your domain name is
requested.
- Step 4
– Cancel your old hosting service.
After
the three steps above have been accomplished if you have not already
canceled your service with your current (old) web hosting provider then
we recommend doing it at this time. This will reduce your downtime and
risk of experiencing any problems to zero in most cases. If you have cancelled
your service before reaching this step then your old provider could have taken down
your site. Thus you would not be able to get a copy of your files on
your computer to transfer to our servers, and/or your web site wouldn't
have shown up until the domain name was transferred to our servers.
As you can see, canceling service with
your current (old) web host provider too early can cause
problems. But if you canceled your service with your old provider early
then don't worry. Just go to step one or two, whichever is needed, and
begin there as quickly as possible.
