Grizzly hackle is an excellent way to add a naturally "scaly" look to the sides of your fly. Also try tying the grizzly hackle horizontal to give a flat-wing scaly look. When fishing very shallow and clear waters try a simple small fly of just 2 short grizzly hackles. It will give the impression of a non-descript bait fish trying to scurry away.

Grizzly hackles add an excellent representation of scales and the illusion of movement that can turn a good fly pattern into a great pattern!

Make your fly as you normally would and then add a feather or two to both sides. The underlying color will still show through but with an illusion of "fishiness". Or, for a more subtle appearance start with a few grizzly hackles and add your other materials around them.
